Unfinished business remains for jobs, the economy and aid to states

WASHINGTON, DC—After the Senate succeeded on the fourth attempt to extend unemployment benefits through November, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) released the following statement:

“After harmful and needless delay, the Senate has finally extended help for laid off workers.  If this bill did not pass, 200,000 Pennsylvanians would have lost their unemployment insurance by the end of the month.

“Extended unemployment benefits will help families make ends meet after workers lost their jobs through no fault of their own.  Since the money will be spent immediately, it will also help local economies and the economic recovery.

“There is still unfinished business.  Legislation is being blocked that would extend funding to help states like Pennsylvania avoid budget cuts and layoffs.  Legislation to help small businesses expand by increasing access to capital and to provide additional help to businesses to create jobs is still languishing in the Senate.

“Too many people in Washington are more concerned with scoring political points than working together to create jobs and foster economic growth.  I urge senators who have opposed these efforts in the past to put the economy first.”
