Casey Urged Department of Transportation to Award Grant that Will Contribute to Redevelopment of 28 Acre Site / Funding Will Be Directed Towards Design of Cap Over Highway that Will Connect Hill District to Downtown
Washington, DC- U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) announced that the Department of Transportation has awarded the Sports and Exhibition Authority of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County (SEA) a $1.55 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Grant that will boost the Lower Hill District Redevelopment Project. Casey urged DOT to award the grant that will contribute to the redevelopment of the 28 acre site and specifically aid in the design of a “cap” that will run over a nearby highway to connect the Hill district to downtown.
“Connecting the Hill District and downtown Pittsburgh is critical for the region’s economy,” Senator Casey said. “Redeveloping this 28 acre site will create jobs and make important improvements to the region’s infrastructure that are long overdue. I was happy to work with Congressman Mike Doyle on this effort.”
The TIGER program provides a unique opportunity for the DOT to invest in road, rail, transit and port projects that promise to achieve critical national objectives. Since 2009, Congress has dedicated more than $4.1 billion for six rounds to fund projects that have a significant impact on the Nation, a region or a metropolitan area.
