With Measure Set for Floor Vote, Senator and High Ranking PA Law Enforcement Official Make Case for Byrne/JAG Grant Program
Data, Examples from Across State Demonstrate Need for Casey Amendment that Invests in Law Enforcement
Washington DC- With a budget on the Senate floor, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) pushed for passage of his amendment that could add critical funds to Pennsylvania law enforcement today during a conference call. Senator Casey’s amendment is set for a vote this week.
“Our brave law enforcement officers are doing all they can to combat crime, but they need adequate resources to do their jobs,” said Senator Casey. “Funding these law enforcement programs will put more cops on the beat and ensure that our officers have the equipment they need to keep Pennsylvanians safe.”
Casey was joined by Linda Rosenberg, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency who highlighted the importance of the Byrne/JAG program to fighting and reducing crime across Pennsylvania. Senator Casey discussed regional data and examples that make the case for increasing funds to local law enforcement through the Byrne/JAG grant program.
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grants (JAG) Program supports crime fighting innovation and has helped local law enforcement agencies across Pennsylvania ensure immediate and thorough responses to crimes.
A few of the projects made possible by the Byrne JAG Program can be found below:
- Southern Clarion County Regional Police Department: The Southern Clarion County Regional Police Department (SCCRPD) was awarded third year federal funding in the amount of $15,382, which will be supplemented by a 75% match of local dollars, to continue to fund the salary of the SCCRPD Police Chief. These funds will allow the SCCRPD to continue providing both full patrol coverage along with other community-based services to the seven municipalities in the coverage area.
- Fayette County Booking Center Incipiency: Fayette County was awarded $123,140 in federal funds to continue to support their Central Booking Center (CBC). Grant funds will be used for the salary and benefits of a full-time CBC Manager, six contracted constables, and two part-time Intake Officers to cover CBC shifts. Funds will also be used for necessary supplies and utilities, equipment and maintenance fees.
- Philadelphia City Treasurer Electronic Parole Petitions: The Philadelphia City Treasurer was awarded $40,000 in federal funds for continuation of the Electronic Parole Petition Project that began through a grant from PCCD in 2010. The funds will be supplemented by a 50% match to continue developing an electronic parole petition system.
- Pennsylvania District Attorneys Institute: The Pennsylvania District Attorneys Institute (PDAI) was awarded $296,788 in federal funds to provide pertinent and current training to Pennsylvania prosecutors and law enforcement officers. Prosecutor training and law enforcement training will focus on criminal law practice, procedure, and investigation as it applies to the prosecution of criminal cases.
