Casey fought to secure funding from Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program
Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) announced $160,000 in federal funding for the GoShamokin! Revitalization Plan to develop a comprehensive safety action plan. The plan would identify action steps needed to upgrade the city of Shamokin with a focus on improving connectivity, ADA accessibility, integrating new technologies, addressing safety, and enhancing bike and pedestrian elements.
“Rebuilding our Nation’s crumbling infrastructure isn’t just about repaving roads, it’s about improving safety and making infrastructure work for the needs of our towns,” said Senator Casey. “I fought to secure this funding because this is a community-driven project that will increase accessibility and connect residents of Shamokin. This project will help protect and save the lives of Pennsylvanians and visitors in Shamokin.”
The funding, provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation’ Safe Streets and Roads for All program, will go to SEDA-COG, an economic development organization for 11 counties in Central Pennsylvania. Senator Casey supported SEDA-COG’s grant for this funding. From 2016-2020, there were 162 vehicular crashes in Shamokin, resulting in 94 injuries, including two deaths.
