WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Bob Casey announced today that $3,070,000 in federal funding has been awarded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to the Pennsylvania Department of Public Health. This grant will allow public health officials to identify and eliminate health hazards in high-risk homes across the state, as well as educate homeowners about the dangers of lead-based paint.

“Every family deserves a safe environment in which to live,” said Senator Casey. “Eliminating lead-based paint will remove a toxin that threatens the health and safety of anyone in these buildings.”

This funding was awarded by the HUD Office of Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Control as part of the Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control, Lead Hazard Reduction Demonstration, Lead Outreach and Healthy Homes Tech Studies Grant Programs. It will allow the Pennsylvania Department of Health to evaluate 270 owner-occupied, rental and vacant homes for lead paint and lead hazards, conduct 300 outreach and education events and train approximately 32 individuals in housing related fields. It will partner with the cities of Bethlehem, Easton, Harrisburg, Johnstown, Lancaster and Philadelphia and the counties of Allegheny and Fayette for these projects.
