WASHINGTON, DC-U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $47,408,809 to transit agencies throughout Pennsylvania to boost infrastructure by maintaining bus and rail systems.
“Providing support to our transit agencies to update their equipment and maintain their facilities is a vital service that benefits all of the people of Pennsylvania,” said Senator Casey. “I am pleased to see funds that will update our infrastructure which will help to ensure that the people of Pennsylvania are provided safe and energy efficient means of transportation.”
The federal grants, awarded through the Federal Transit Administration’s 2010 State of Good Repair Program, will be used to maintain Pennsylvania bus and rail systems by replacing buses with new energy efficient vehicles and by building and updating transit facilities.
The funding is part of a nationwide program by the U.S. Department of Transportation which allocates funds to replace infrastructure components on a schedule consistent with their life expectancy. The mission of the State of Good Repair program is to ensure that daily riders of public transportation are being provided a safe and reliable service.
