WASHINGTON, DC-U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded $4,805,763 to public health facilities throughout Pennsylvania to support a variety of public health programs.

“Providing support in the prevention of disease is a vital step for our health system to better serve the people of Pennsylvania,” said Senator Casey. “I am pleased to see funds going to programs that will strengthen our healthcare system by taking a preemptive approach to healthcare, ensuring that Pennsylvanians have the care they need to stay healthy.”

The federal grants, awarded through the Prevention and Public Health Fund created by the Affordable Care Act, will be used to fund Pennsylvania public health programs that address key health issues such as HIV/AIDS, obesity, mental health issues and substance abuse.

The funding is part of a nationwide program announced by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Secretary Kathleen Sebelius awarding over $100 million in grants to various states.  Over $75 million in grants will be used to fund key state and local public health programs supported through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Another $26.2 million in grants will be used by state and community substance abuse and mental health programs from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
