Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Bob Casey, Chairman of the Employment and Workplace Safety subcommittee, applaud the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Executive Order enacted today. The order requires, among other things, the disclosure of labor law violations such as wage and hour and health and safety violations, during the bidding process. It would also ensure that repeat offenders do not receive federal contracts.
“Companies that break the law shouldn’t benefit from taxpayer-funded contracts,” said Senator Casey. “This should be especially true when the health, safety and basic labor rights of workers are put at risk. These violations not only hurt workers, it hurts the vast majority of companies that play by the rules, but might lose a contract to an unscrupulous competitor. The Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Executive Order is a step in the right direction to protect workers and make federal contracting more efficient.”
The President’s Order comes one year after the Chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, Senator Tom Harkin, compiled a report on labor and wage law violations and found that nearly 30 percent of the top violators are currently receiving federal contracts, resulting in poor performance and a waste of taxpayer money.
