Chung Would Be First Asian Pacific American (APA) Judge to Serve on Third Circuit
Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) is releasing the following statement applauding the nomination of Cindy Chung to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit:
“I am pleased that President Biden has nominated Cindy Chung to serve as a Circuit Judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Since 2014, she has served the people of the Western District of PA with integrity, distinction and a commitment to administering fair and equal justice for all, most recently as United States Attorney. Cindy has been a trailblazer throughout her career—not only by serving as the first Senate-confirmed APA U.S. Attorney in Pennsylvania, but also working on the first Shepherd-Byrd Hate Crimes Prevention Act prosecution in the country. Today’s nomination is equally historic: if confirmed, she will become the first APA judge to serve on the Third Circuit. I look forward to supporting her nomination and urge the Senate to confirm her quickly.”
Cindy K. Chung has served as the United States Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania since 2021. Ms. Chung served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania from 2014 to 2021. From 2009 to 2014, Ms. Chung served as a trial attorney in the Criminal Section of the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division. From 2003 to 2009, she served as an Assistant District Attorney in the New York County District Attorney’s Office. Ms. Chung served as a law clerk for Judge Myron Thompson on the United States District Court for the Middle District of Alabama from 2002 to 2003. She received her J.D. from Columbia Law School in 2002 and her B.A. from Yale University in 1997.
