Su, current Deputy Secretary of Labor, is a life-long champion for low-wage workers and advocate against modern-day slavery
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) released a statement applauding the nomination of Deputy Secretary of Labor, Julie Su, to lead the Department of Labor, following President Joe Biden sending Su’s nomination to the Senate this week:
“A strong champion for workers, Julie Su is eminently qualified to lead the Department of Labor,” Senator Casey said. “Julie has spent her life advocating for better working conditions, combatting wage theft and discrimination, and empowering workers. The daughter of a union worker, she understands the power that a union can have in providing opportunities for working families. I am grateful for her willingness to serve and look forward to supporting her nomination.”
Julie A. Su has served as the Deputy Secretary of Labor since July 2021. She has spent her nearly thirty-year career at the forefront of the fight for workers. At age 26, she was the lead attorney in the El Monte Thai Garment Slavery Case–the first recognized case of modern-day slavery since the abolition of slavery–securing a $4 million settlement from notable manufacturers and retailers for their exploitation and as well as legal status for the undocumented Thai nationals. As a senior California labor official, Su fought to enforce workplace safety standards, crack down on wage theft, protect trafficked workers, and increase the minimum wage. As Deputy Secretary of Labor, Su has been a strong advocate for improving workplace conditions, improving access to job training and avenues to employments, and increasing union membership while creating good-paying jobs.
