WASHINGTON, DC— U.S. Senator Bob Casey today applauded the Senate passage of legislation to ensure health care for the 9/11 heroes who heeded the call of duty to respond to the attack on the World Trade Center (WTC) and who participated in the recovery efforts.  The final version of the legislation is expected to be passed by the House before being signed by the president.

“There are 1,189 Pennsylvanians in the WTC health registry for WTC-related conditions, including 688 rescue and recovery workers or volunteers,” said Senator Casey.  “These heroes put their lives and health at risk without concern for their own safety.  The least we can do for them is to take care of them.  I’m proud to have been an early supporter of this legislation and I am pleased that it has overcome opposition in the Senate that threatened the delivery of health care to those who become ill responding to the attack on the World Trade Center.”

Senator Casey was a cosponsor of legislation introduced previously in the Senate on which the legislation passed today was based.
