Legislation Would Protect PA Jobs, Manufacturers and Small Businesses by Maintaining Tariffs on Unfairly Subsidized Goods from China
County-by-County List Shows PA Companies That Benefit from Protections
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) today announced the passage of bipartisan legislation to prevent the repeal of trade remedies that help Pennsylvania companies compete against unfair imports from countries like China.
“Passing this bill will help level the playing field for Pennsylvania’s manufacturers,” Casey said. “Much has to be done to confront China’s unfair trade practices but today’s vote sends a bipartisan message that we will not stand by as China cheats.”
The legislation would maintain the Commerce Department’s ability to apply tariffs, known as countervailing duties, on unfairly subsidized goods produced in nonmarket economies like China. A ruling in December by a federal appeals court would have limited the Unite States’ ability to apply these tariffs, putting Pennsylvania jobs and manufacturers at a disadvantage.
In addition to Senator Casey, this bipartisan bill was introduced by Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Max Baucus (D-MT), John Thune (R-SD), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Tom Coburn (R-OK), John D. (Jay) Rockefeller (D-WV), Susan Collins (R-ME), Rob Portman (R-OH), Tom Carper (D-DE) and Jeff Sessions (R-AL). An identical, bipartisan bill was also introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. Passage in the House will send it to the President.
