PA Senior Senator Cosponsors FAMILY Act

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) is announcing his cosponsorship of legislation to ensure paid family and medical leave for workers across the country. Specifically, the Family and Medical Insurance Leave (FAMILY) Act would provide workers with the option to take up to 12 weeks of paid leave, financed through worker contributions to a trust fund, similar to Social Security.

“Whether addressing one’s own health needs, taking care of a sick loved one or nurturing a newborn child, working families deserve peace of mind when it comes to paid leave,” said Senator Casey. “I’m proud to support legislation that will ensure that families across the country have financial certainty when they need it most and I call on my colleagues to join in this effort so we can make sure that all workers get a fair shot.”

The Family and Medical Insurance Leave (FAMILY) Act would:

  • Provide workers with up to 12 weeks of partial income when they take time for their own medical leave, including pregnancy and childbirth recovery; the serious health condition of a child, parent, spouse or domestic partner; the birth or adoption of a child; and/or for particular military caregiving and leave purposes.
  • Enable workers to earn 66 percent of their monthly wages, up to a capped amount – ensuring that low- and middle-wage workers have a higher share of their wages replaced.
  • Cover workers in all companies, no matter their size. Younger, part-time, lower-wage, contingent and self-employed workers would be eligible for benefits.
