WASHINGTON, DC— U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), Chairman of the Near Eastern and South and Central Asian Affairs Subcommittee of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement in response to the Iranian regime’s crackdown on demonstrations:

“I denounce the violence perpetrated by the Iranian government against peaceful demonstrators across the country.

“The regime’s hypocrisy has hit a new low.  While the Iranian leadership applauded the courage of Egyptian activists in Tahrir Square last week, they brutally repress dissent by their own citizens this week. The regime also took measures to restrict the Internet during the demonstrations, robbing its citizens of the right to free speech.

“I welcome the Obama administration’s renewed efforts to support Internet freedom around the world and the universal rights of assembly and speech.”
