County-by-County Breakdown Shows Nearly 150,000 Older Pennsylvanians Will Save on Prescription Drugs
WASHINGTON, DC –U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) announced today that a change to Medicare’s so-called ‘donut hole’ will save older Pennsylvanians more than $87 million on prescription drugs this year. Beginning this year, older Pennsylvanians who fall into the donut hole will save about 40% on their prescription drugs - an average savings of about $600.
“A nearly $600 reduction in prescription drug costs can’t come at a better time for older Pennsylvanians struggling to afford basic necessities like medication,” Senator Casey said. “Reducing the costs of prescription drugs is a win-win: it will save older Pennsylvanians money and boost the state’s economy.”
Medicare Part D helps older Americans pay for their prescription drugs, but there has long been a gap in the coverage. Once a prescription cost enters a certain range, older Americans are required to pay out-of-pocket for their prescription drugs, entering the so-called donut hole. Reforms made to the program in 2010 and being implemented for the first time this year mean that those stuck in the donut hole will now receive a major discount on their medicine. Nearly 150,000 older Pennsylvanians will benefit from these changes.
Senator Casey supported the changes to Medicare’s donut hole and has long fought to reduce the price of prescription drugs for Pennsylvania’s older citizens.
