Lt. Col. Lynn Ray Has Served Country Abroad and At Home

Washington, DC- Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) participated in a military promotion ceremony for Philadelphia native, Lieutenant Colonel Lynn Ray. Ray was promoted from Major to Lieutenant Colonel after serving in the military since 1987. She’s served abroad in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Kosovo and at home in states like Georgia and Kansas.

“I was honored to play a role in promoting Lynn Ray to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel,” Senator Casey said. “Pennsylvania has a long and rich history of military service and Lieutenant Colonel Ray’s service overseas and here at home is an example of the sacrifices that so many Pennsylvanians have made.”

Lieutenant Colonel Lynn W. Ray is a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, Corps of Engineers upon graduation of Officer Candidate School in 1997.    

Lieutenant Colonel Ray’s next assignment was as a Platoon Leader and Company Executive Officer with the 27th Engineer Battalion, 20th Engineer Brigade at Fort Bragg, NC from 1997-2000.   Her next assignment was as the Battalion Logistical Officer in 11th Engineer Battalion March 2001-March 2002 while deployed in Kosovo.  Ray followed on with Company Command of HHC, 11th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division while forward deployed in OIF 1 and assumed a second command of HHC, 3rd Engineer Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division from April 2002- July 2004.  Her next assignment was 3rd Army Headquarters in Fort McPherson, GA where she worked as a Theater Security Assistance Officer from 2004-2006.  Ray’s next assignment took her to the United States Military Academy at West Point where she was the Engineer Branch Representative, instructor for Military Science and Engineer summer trainer for cadets from 2006-2009.  Lieutenant Colonel Ray completed ILE at Fort Leavenworth, KS in June 2010.      

Lieutenant Colonel Ray was next assigned to the 92nd Engineer Battalion, Fort Stewart, GA where she joined a unit forward deployed in Afghanistan as the Battalion Operations Officer and later the Battalion Executive Officer from June 2010-June 2012.  She is currently assigned to the Office of the Chief of Legislative Liaison and works in the Senate Liaison Division.  

Her military education includes ILE, Joint Fires Observer, Space Operations, Combined Armed Services Staff School (CAS3), Humanitarian Demining Operations, Engineer Officer Advance Course, Engineer Officer Basic Course, Air Assault School, Airborne School, Advanced Airborne School (Jumpmaster), and Equal Opportunity Course.  She also holds a MPA from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, NY. 

Her awards and decorations include the Bronze Star (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), Meritorious Service Medal (3rd Oak Leaf Cluster), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (3rd Oak Leaf Cluster), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal (2nd Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Good Conduct Medal (3rd Awd), National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal (2nd star), Kuwait Liberation medal, Non-commissioned Officer Developmental Ribbon (2nd Awd), Kosovo Campaign Medal, Afghan Campaign Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Ribbon (3rd Awd), NATO Medal, Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and the OSD Badge and Combat Action Badge and the Distinguished Engineer Bronze DeFluery medal. 

Lieutenant Colonel Ray is married to First Sergeant (Ret) Gary Ray of Sandersville, GA.
