In Pennsylvania, 66% of Children Have Mother Working Outside of Home
For 32% of PA Households, Mother Is Primary Earner
Washington DC- With Mother’s Day approaching, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) highlighted a new report showing the economic impact that mothers have across the Commonwealth. A report released by the Joint Economic Committee (JEC), of which Senator Casey is a member, showed that in Pennsylvania 66% of children have a mother working outside the home, 23% of children have a single mom working outside the home and for 32% of Pennsylvania households, the mother is the primary earner.
“Across Pennsylvania, mothers are a major driver of economic growth and job creation,” Senator Casey said. “We should pause this weekend to celebrate our mothers, but we can’t stop there. To truly honor our mothers, we need to put policies in place that support equal pay for equal work and increase workplace flexibility so that mothers across the Commonwealth can continue to drive our economy forward.”
Senator Casey has been one of the Senate’s leaders in supporting equal pay for equal work. He is an original cosponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act and has introduced legislation to strengthen the rights of employees to request flexible work options and the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act that would strengthen anti-discrimination provisions against pregnant workers.
