Speaks on Senate Floor About Resolution

WASHINGTON, DC- U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) today took to the Senate floor to honor the memory of Dr. Randy Pausch, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer earlier this year.  Senator Casey also introduced a resolution recognizing November as National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness month.

“Dr. Randy Pausch lived life to the fullest in every sense of that word, in every sense of that phrase,” said Senator Casey.  “He was a loving husband and father, a dedicated educator and an impassioned advocate.  While his life was cut short by pancreatic cancer, his legacy for living is one we should all cherish.”

Dr. Paush was best known for his “Last Lecture” which he delivered at Carnegie Mellon University and which became an internet phenomenon.   It has recently been turned into a bestselling book.

Pancreatic Cancer is the fourth-leading cause of cancer death in the United States of America.  Seventy-five percent of pancreatic cancer patients die within one year of diagnosis.  The survival rate for pancreatic cancer today is the same as it was 30 years ago.

The resolution introduced today by Senator Casey and Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and co-sponsored by Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA), urges greater public awareness and resources for prevention, early detection and treatment of this disease.
