Casey: Smokin’ Joe was PA’s Real Life Rocky, Will Always be Remembered
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) today introduced a Senate Resolution honoring the life of boxing legend Joe Frazier. Frazier, born to humble beginnings, began his historic ascent in boxing history punching meat in a Philadelphia slaughterhouse. While always maintaining roots in Philadelphia, Frazier went on to become a world heavyweight champion, battling Muhammad Ali throughout his career in a series of legendary bouts.
Frazier was also known for his countless works of charity, particularly to the Philadelphia community. His foundation, the Smokin’ Joe Frazier Foundation, helps inner city youth become “Life Champions” by helping them succeed in school and stay away from violence and drugs.
“Smokin’ Joe was an American boxing legend and Philadelphia icon -- our real life Rocky. He had a heart as big as his left hook,” Senator Casey said. “Joe Frazier made his mark on Pennsylvania not only as a sports legend but, more importantly, as a dedicated and generous community leader. He came from humble beginnings and through hard work and determination became one of the world’s most well-known boxers.”
Casey introduced the resolution with Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC).
The bipartisan resolution honors one of boxing’s legends and someone who proudly wore the badge of a Philadelphian. Frazier’s historic boxing career is remembered as a classic, from his climb to the title of heavyweight champ to his legendary battles with Muhammad Ali. Today’s resolution celebrates Frazier’s life and the impact he had on the Philadelphia community.
