Provisions To Establish Susquehanna National Heritage Area, Fund Rivers Of Steel National Heritage Area Pass Critical Vote

Washington, D.C. - Following advocacy by U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), two provisions to assist major public lands projects in Pennsylvania have cleared a Senate Vote. Among other wins for Pennsylvanians, the Natural Resources Management Act includes a measure to establish a Susquehanna National Heritage Area in Lancaster and York counties and includes funding fix to ensure that the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area in Pittsburgh continues to receive funding.

“I am pleased that we were able to work together on legislation that sets provisions for the conservation of federal lands in south central and southwestern Pennsylvania,” said Senator Casey. “The Senate took an important step in protecting our historic landscapes and I urge the House and the President to pass and sign this bill into law.”

The Natural Resource Management Act would set provisions for various programs, projects and studies for the management and conservation of natural resources on federal lands. The bill would designate Susquehanna Heritage in Lancaster and York Counties as a National Heritage Area. It would also continue funding for the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area in Pittsburgh. National Heritage Areas are places where historic, cultural, and national resources combine to create nationally important landscapes. These landscapes are designated to promote historic preservation with collaboration from the local community.
