PHILADELPHIA, PA – U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) joined Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter to officially open the Frankford Farmers Market at the Frankford Transportation Center, a new market strategically located to promote Pennsylvania’s agricultural industry, healthy eating, transit-oriented development and livable neighborhoods.
“The Frankford Farmers Market represents an innovative way to promote Pennsylvania agriculture, stimulate the local economy, create jobs and improve access to fresh, healthy foods for the community,” said Senator Casey. “Through programs like Get Healthy Philly we can continue Pennsylvania’s proud agriculture tradition to support jobs and health throughout the state.”
The Frankford Farmers’ Market is funded in part by Get Healthy Philly. The funds were distributed through the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Communities Putting Prevention to Work initiative.
As a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, Senator Casey is a strong supporter of programs to strengthen Pennsylvania agriculture and improve nutrition, having introduced legislation to improve access to healthy foods for children and low-income seniors, create and preserve jobs in the agriculture industry and promote nutrition education by involving school children in farm and garden-based education activities.
