Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) released a statement following the Trump Administration's notice to Congress on renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA):
"I commend the decision to move forward with the renegotiation of NAFTA, which is a deeply flawed trade deal that has disadvantaged Pennsylvania workers. While today’s announcement is a welcome step, we must see real details on how the Administration intends to level the playing field for our workers in Pennsylvanian and across the country. In February, I outlined several necessary steps, including: Mexico’s lax enforcement of labor and environmental standards, rules of origin provisions which for some products end up giving NAFTA benefits to products containing components imported from China, Rules that compromise the United States’ ability to enforce its trade remedy laws; and Investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) provisions. I will hold the Administration accountable for achieving measureable reform of NAFTA that helps workers in Pennsylvania, creates jobs and raises wages."
