WASHINGTON, DC— U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near Eastern and South and Central Asian Affairs, released the following statement after President Obama nominated General David Petraeus as the next U.S. Commander in Afghanistan:

“I welcome the appointment of General David Petraeus to serve as U.S. Commander in Afghanistan and call for his immediate confirmation by the Senate.  General Petraeus has an exemplary record as Commander of U.S. Central Command.  He led U.S. forces with distinction in Iraq.  General Petraeus has once again answered his country’s call to duty at this perilous time in our history.  There is no better man for the job.

“His appointment should renew the resolve of the international effort in Afghanistan and I am confident that he will seamlessly step in to his new assignment leading forces fighting the Taliban and extremists in Afghanistan.”
