Senator To Oppose GOP Short-Term Funding Proposal
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) released the following statement on the GOP’s proposed short-term funding bill:
“Washington Republicans spent the entire year working to undermine the middle class and ramming their right wing agenda through Congress. Republicans have spent the last year obsessed with cutting Medicaid which adversely impacts middle class families, children, seniors and individuals with disabilities, while handing out tax cuts to the super wealthy and big corporations and their CEOs.
Even with one-party rule, Republicans have failed to demonstrate that they can govern or keep their promises to many Americans. House Republicans will pass a bill that shortchanges community health centers, our military, veterans, retired coal miners whose pensions are at risk, those impacted by the opioid crisis and young people who were brought to this country as children. There are bipartisan agreements in place that would solve these challenges. For example, no fewer than seven Senate Republicans have joined with Senate Democrats on a bipartisan deal to improve border security and help young Dreamers. However, Republicans want to force the government shutdown that the President has wanted for months.
Democrats like me are ready to negotiate bipartisan agreements for the American people. Congress should stay in session until an agreement is reached that provides funding for rural health care, our veterans, our workers, retirees, national security and the Dreamers. Republican politicians spent months trying to rip health care away from Pennsylvanians by decimating Medicaid, while providing giveaways to the super-rich. Once again, congressional Republicans and the Administration have put forth a funding deal that insults the middle class. It’s time to pass a funding agreement that will help the middle class, not a bad deal cooked up by Washington Republicans and special interests.”
