WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) released the following statement on the deal announced today between Sunoco and the Carlyle Group to maintain and improve the oil refinery in Philadelphia, preserving and creating thousands of jobs:
"This deal is a big win for the Philadelphia region. Maintaining refining capacity in Philadelphia was a major priority not only for jobs in the region but for consumers all across the northeast. I worked closely with Sunoco and other stakeholders to make sure jobs were not lost as a result of the refinery's transition, and I'm pleased that on top of the jobs that were preserved, thousands of additional jobs are expected to be created as Philadelphia Energy Solutions makes improvements to the facility."
Senator Casey has fought to preserve refining capacity in the Philadelphia region. As Chairman of the Joint Economic Committee (JEC), Senator Casey held a hearing in April on the impact of potential refinery closures on gas prices in the northeast, and he recently worked with Delta and other officials to preserve jobs and refining capacity at the Trainer oil refinery.
