Pennsylvania Ranks 3rd In Nation in Student Loan Debt / Republicans Today Blocked Casey-Cosponsored Bill to Provide Refinancing of Student Loans / Earlier, Casey Took to the Floor to Urge for Passage of the Bill

Washington, DC - U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) today released the following statement after the Senate failed to invoke cloture on a Casey co-sponsored bill to help make college affordable:

“Today, the Senate failed to give middle class Americans a fairshot by providing common-sense relief for skyrocketing student loan debt,” said Senator Casey. “Pennsylvania ranks third in the nation in student loan debt and too many young people in our Commonwealth can’t get ahead because of the burden of these college loans.  In today’s global economy, higher education is more important than ever and it is imperative that we provide Americans with the tools they need to compete.”

According to The Institute for College Access & Success, as of 2012, Pennsylvania ranked 3rd in the nation on highest average student debt – nearly $32,000 per student – and 70% of graduates in our state leave with debt, the 4th highest of any state.

Last night, Senator Casey went to the Senate Floor to urge passage of the bill.
