WASHINGTON. - U.S. Senators Bob Casey and Arlen Specter announced today that the Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded $3,392,782 in federal funding for the Cumberland-Dauphin-Harrisburg Transit Authority (CAT) in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This funding, part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will provide new buses for Harrisburg public transportation.
“I am happy that this funding is being granted to Harrisburg as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act,” Senator Casey said. “These funds will improve Harrisburg’s bus fleet and will hopefully encourage more Pennsylvanians to take advantage of our public transportation options.”
“I am pleased that stimulus funding is being used to advance important transportation projects in Pennsylvania,” Specter said. “The acquisition of these new buses will enhance public transportation in the region.”
Today’s grant is part of the Urbanized Area Formula Fund, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. These grants provide operating assistance to urban areas with populations of more than 50,000.
The majority of the funding, $2,850,000, will be used toward the purchase of five hybrid-electric buses for CAT. These buses will replace vehicles that have been on the road for 15 years and have outlived their usefulness. The remaining $542,782 in this grant will be used for CAT operating expenses.
