WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senators Bob Casey and Arlen Specter today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has awarded $13,336,900 to the Freeland Municipal Authority for rural water infrastructure improvement as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“I’m pleased that Freeland is receiving federal funding to improve their water system,” said Senator Casey. “This project is yet another example of the way that Recovery funds are being used to benefit communities both by improving the quality of fundamental infrastructure and by creating or retaining jobs.”

“I am pleased to see stimulus funding awarded to Luzerne County to upgrade wastewater infrastructure in Freeland Borough,” said Senator Specter.  “The project will help to protect our precious waterways and act as a boon to the local job market.”

The funding is administered through the USDA Rural Development’s Water and Environmental Program which provides loans and grants to ensure that the necessary investments are made in water and wastewater infrastructure to deliver safe drinking water and protect the environment in rural areas.
