WASHINGTON, DC. - U.S. Senators Bob Casey and Arlen Specter applauded the announcement by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that Pittsburgh International Airport will be receiving Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) to increase aviation security and protect Pittsburgh air travelers. The funding for the imaging equipment is available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
“In this time of global instability and terrorism, we must do everything in our power to ensure the safety of Americans,” said Senator Casey. “The addition of Advanced Imaging Technology at Pittsburgh International Airport is a step in the right direction towards protecting the safety of air travelers in Pittsburgh and across the country.”
“I am pleased that Pittsburgh International Airport has been selected to receive funding for this state of the art equipment,” said Senator Specter. “This advanced technology will enhance security and help protect passengers from potential threats. This is another great example of Recovery Act funds being put to good use in Pennsylvania.”
Advanced imaging technology safely screens passengers for both metallic and non-metallic threats, including weapons and explosives. It detects items which may be concealed by a passenger, allows TSA to screen without physical contact and works to keep the traveling public safe. Pittsburgh International Airport will be one of 28 airports receiving AIT, purchased with ARRA funds, in the coming weeks.
