Introduce resolution to raise awareness
WASHINGTON, DC- U.S. Senators Bob Casey (D-PA) and Arlen Specter (R-PA) today introduced a bipartisan resolution to recognize National Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April.
“I am pleased to introduce this resolution to increase public awareness about sexual assault,” said Senator Casey. “It provides a special opportunity to educate people about sexual violence and the impact of this crime that changes many lives forever and sometimes irrevocably. It is my fervent hope that individuals and communities will take this opportunity to honor victims and survivors of this crime and to highlight preventive measures and activities.”
“The immediate and long-term physical and psychological damage from sexual violence can lead to harmful and lasting consequences for victims, families, and communities,” Senator Specter said. “I support the goals of Sexual Assault Awareness Month which encourages the prevention of sexual assault, the improved treatment of its survivors, and the prosecution of its perpetrators.”
The resolution introduced today establishes April 2008 as National Sexual Assault Awareness Month. It pays tribute to the many survivors of sexual violence and applauds the work of community organizations and other supporters who help survivors and promote prevention and awareness. These are important and vital services in the lives not only of those who have been assaulted, but all of us. Increasing public awareness helps in the fight to prevent sexual assault and reduce the number of people who are sexually assaulted, saving those individuals from the nightmare others know all too well.
