Washington, DC- Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) released the following statement on Bashar al-Assad’s announcement to run for re-election:
“Assad’s self-nomination to run for re-election in Syria’s upcoming Presidential elections, in which no opposition members are represented, while he starves his own citizens as a tactic of war, is an insult to the world community. The decision to hold these sham elections when 2.7 million Syrians have fled the country, over 150,000 Syrians have been killed, and 9.3 million people need humanitarian assistance, is a reminder of Assad’s determination to retain power - no matter the cost.”
