Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) released the following statement on the European Union’s designation of Hezbollah’s military wing as a terrorist organization:
“I welcome today’s news that the European Union has designated Hezbollah’s military wing as a terrorist organization. I have called for this designation through several letters to EU Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton and in a Senate resolution which was passed unanimously. Implementation of these new sanctions will be key and I urge the EU to craft very stringent guidelines to ensure that European funding sources for Hezbollah are cut off. While certainly a step in the right direction, this designation however does not go far enough. The EU cannot distinguish and separate Hezbollah’s ‘militant’ wing from its political wing. It is all one terrorist organization and should be designated as such. I urge the EU to acknowledge reality and move urgently to fully designate Hezbollah as a terrorist organization with no caveats or exceptions.”
