Washington, DC- Today, U.S. Senators Bob Casey (D-PA) released the following statement after meeting with Dr. David Shulkin, who is nominated to be the Undersecretary of Health for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs:

“I appreciated the opportunity to speak with Dr. David Shulkin, a fellow Pennsylvanian, to discuss his nomination to be the Undersecretary of Health for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs.  If confirmed, Mr. Shulkin will bring deep experience and sterling credentials to this job.  He will need them.  It is clear that the challenges facing the VA are enormous and that there is a crisis of confidence with the state of VA health care.

During this meeting, I pressed him on a host of issues facing veterans in Pennsylvania and around the country, including lack of reporting and accountability during the Legionnaires’ outbreak in Pittsburgh and the culture of fear that has become prevalent throughout the VA. I stressed that it is critical that the VA refocus its efforts on ensuring that our Veterans who have sacrificed greatly for our country receive the timely and quality care that they have earned. I received important assurances from Dr. Shulkin that he is committed to take the actions needed to improve the delivery of the highest quality care to our veterans who deserve nothing less from the VA.

I look forward to working with Dr. Shulkin, if confirmed, to ensure these issues are addressed promptly.”
