Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Bob Casey, a member of the National Security Working Group, released a statement following the Assad’s regime’s release of journalist Mazen Darwish:

“The release of journalist Mazen Darwish is a positive development for him, his family and journalists throughout the world who are taking incredible risks to tell the truth. The release of Mr. Darwish is long overdue and the Assad regime doesn’t deserve a pat on the back for finally doing the right thing. This is still a regime that is responsible for scores of human rights violations like the use of chemical weapons and the repeated barrel bombing of civilians including children. It’s because of journalists like Mazen Darwish that the world knows the truth about the brutality of the Assad regime. I will continue to push for passage of a resolution I introduced with Senators Rubio and Wyden that recognizes the importance of press freedom and specifically calls for the release of Mr. Darwish. The Assad regime should drop the charges against Mr. Darwish and immediately move forward on the release of all journalists who have been imprisoned for nothing more than doing their job.”
