Washington DC-  Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), a member of the National Security Working Group and Co-Chair of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Terrorism Caucus, released a statement after the Syrian National Coalition (SNC) voted to attend the upcoming Geneva peace conference.

"The announcement that the Syrian National Coalition will attend the upcoming peace talks in Switzerland is an encouraging development.  Bashar al-Assad's brutal rule of Syria has gone on long enough.  I have repeatedly called for the State Department to do more to support Syria's moderate opposition. I reiterated this in a letter to Secretary Kerry last week. The U.S. and our international partners must support the SNC and members of the political opposition in setting clear goals for the Switzerland talks.  While discussions of ceasefires and prisoner exchanges are welcome confidence-building measures, these talks should chart a course towards a transition of power that ends the fighting and allows the Syrian people to begin rebuilding their war-ravaged country."
