Washington DC-  Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) released the following statement on the government shutdown.

“Pennsylvanians have a right to be angry that a reckless minority in one faction of one party in one house of Congress has forced the government to shut down for the first time in 17 years. The Speaker could act to open the government today by allowing a vote on the funding bill that the Senate first sent to the House on Friday.  In a 20 minute vote, the shutdown would be over.  To prevent a vote is reckless and irresponsible and the consequences for Pennsylvania and our nation are grave.  I am encouraged that several Republican representatives have spoken out in favor of a clean funding bill and I hope that they can convince their colleagues to do the same.  During the shutdown, my office is unable to maintain regular operations but the skeletal staff and I will do our best to be as responsive as possible.”
