Washington, DC- Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) announced that he has urged Aldi to protect 1,600 Pennsylvania jobs as it prepares to acquire Bottom Dollar Grocery Stores at the end of the year. Bottom Dollar has 46 stores in Pennsylvania, and over 1,600 jobs could be lost when the takeover is complete. Aldi has not yet announced whether potentially shuttered stores could reopen or whether any laid off worker would be eligible for rehire. In a letter to Aldi’s President, Casey urged the company to keep Bottom Dollar Stores in Pennsylvania open and protect the region’s jobs.
“Our state’s workforce has earned its reputation as one of the most highly skilled in the country. I’m hopeful that Aldi will consider the quality of our region’s workforce and protect these jobs,” Senator Casey said. “Keeping these stores open will provide communities across Pennsylvania with the option to purchase fresh food and add to economic growth.”

Dear Mr. Hart:
I write today with regards to ALDI, Inc.’s recent purchase of the Bottom Dollar grocery store chain in Pennsylvania. There have been news reports that ALDI, Inc. will close all Bottom Dollar stores. The closure of the Bottom Dollar stores will have a negative impact on the Commonwealth and could result in the loss of more than 1,600 jobs. With the holiday season upon us, I urge you to review this decision.
I have serious concerns about how this recent acquisition would affect the employees of the Bottom Dollar grocery stores. I encourage you to give serious consideration to any option that will protect the over 1,600 jobs at stake and preserve Bottom Dollar’s current locations in the Commonwealth. I look forward to any opportunity to work with you to develop these options, and any federal programs that may be relevant.
