WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) today urged the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to approve Luzerne County’s applications for funding to recover from flash flooding last month.
“The communities affected by this devastating flood deserve all due consideration for resources to recover and rebuild,” said Senator Casey.
In a letter to Commander and District Engineer Colonel David E. Anderson, Senator Casey highlighted the significant damage to roads, bridges and other infrastructure he witnessed in a visit last month to the area of Coal Street in Plymouth Borough and Plymouth Township.
In July, Senator Casey urged the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Small Business Administration to direct resources to the impacted communities and expressed concern that current economic conditions will hinder the community’s ability to recover without federal assistance.

Dear Colonel Anderson:
I am writing to express my strong support for three applications submitted by Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, for Section 14 funding for the significant damage to roads, bridges and other infrastructure which occurred during devastating flash flooding on July 3, 2011.
As you recall, I sent you a letter informing you of the significant damage I saw firsthand at the area of Coal Street in both Plymouth Borough and Plymouth Township. I would like to thank you for your prompt response in getting the Army Corps of Engineers on the ground to assess the integrity of the levee system and I ask that you give full and fair consideration to the County’s proposals.
Thank you in advance for the consideration of my views. I respectfully request that you keep me informed of the status of these applications.
Sincerely,
Robert P. Casey, Jr.
United States Senator
