Livability Is One of the Main Factors Driving Bucks County Economy / With Airport’s Services Expected to Grow, Continued Noise Problems Could Impact Residents in Bucks County / Borough Has Requested Study of Issue

Washington, DC- Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) announced that he has urged the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to closely examine noise problems in Yardley Borough from the Trenton-Mercer Airport in New Jersey. In a letter to the agency’s Administrator, Michael Huerta, Casey called on the FAA to closely examine the impact that these noise problems can have on residents. Currently the Borough has asked for an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) on the New Jersey airport’s improvements.

“Loud noises from airports like Trenton-Mercer can have an impact on our communities and it’s important the FAA carefully consider that moving forward,” Senator Casey said. “The FAA needs to examine this issue closely and be responsive to the concerns raised by residents of Yardley Borough.”

Dear Mr. Huerta:

Recently, I received a letter, attached to this correspondence, from local officials in Yardley Borough in Bucks County, Pennsylvania regarding air traffic into and out of the Trenton-Mercer Airport in New Jersey.  The purpose of this letter is to request that you review the concerns expressed in the attached letter and respond to the concerns of the Borough accordingly.

As you are aware, the Trenton-Mercer Airport provides accessible and affordable air travel to Pennsylvania and New Jersey residents and is important to local economic activity.  However, the Trenton-Mercer Airport is directly across the Delaware River from Yardley Borough and I am informed that ascending and descending aircraft fly directly over the Borough and have caused a substantial amount of noise pollution.  I have been further informed that service to this airport is expected to grow and that the accompanying increase in noise pollution has caused concerns regarding safety and property value among residents.

To mitigate this issue, I understand that Yardley Borough has requested that an Environmental Impact Study be conducted in concert with ongoing improvements at the Airport.  Further it appears that Borough officials would like the FAA to examine flight patterns to and from the Airport to minimize noise pollution to the extent possible.  I ask that you please give these requests, and any others noted in the attached letter, all due consideration.

Thank you in advance for the consideration of my views.  Finally, if you have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to contact me or my staff at (215) 405-9660.

Sincerely,

Robert P. Casey, Jr.
United States Senator
