Suspect Is Alleged to Have Committed Murder, Local Law Enforcement Working on Extradition Since March

Washington, DC- Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) announced that he has written a letter to Italian Ambassador to the United States, Claudio Bisogniero, urging his government to work with local law enforcement in Berks County to proceed with the timely and appropriate extradition of Miguel Torres. According to police, Torres is a suspect in the 2005 murder of his estranged wife. After the alleged crime Torres fled and is now in Italy where he can be extradited.

“I’m encouraging the Italian government to take appropriate steps that will result in the timely extradition of this suspect,” Senator Casey said. “The suspect in this case is charged with a very serious crime. It’s critical that the Italian government work with our law enforcement officials to move this process forward.”

Dear Ambassador Bisogniero:

I am writing to solicit your assistance with an issue that impacts my constituents in Berks County, Pennsylvania.  Local law enforcement officials have charged Miguel Torres with the first degree murder of his estranged wife, Barbara J. West-Torres.  I understand that Mr. Torres has been captured by the Italian authorities in Bologna.  I urge the relevant authorities in Italy to fully cooperate with United States law enforcement officials and extradite Mr. Torres to the United States in a timely and appropriate manner.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.  I strongly value the longstanding relationship between Italy the United States.  I look forward to remaining in close touch as this case proceeds.

Sincerely,

Robert P. Casey, Jr.

United States Senator
