Former President George H.W. Bush Held White House Celebration for 50th Anniversary / Little League Helps Children Learn Important Lessons, Boosts North Central Pennsylvania’s Economy
Washington, DC- As Little League World Series action continues in Williamsport, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), today, urged President Obama to host a 75th anniversary celebration of Little League International next summer. When Little League International celebrated its 50th anniversary President George H.W. Bush hosted a White House event marking the anniversary. In his letter to the President, Senator Casey cited the positive impact that Little League has on youth across the country and the positive role that the annual tournament plays in North Central Pennsylvania’s economy.
“Little League teaches children invaluable life lessons and has become an annual rite of summer for millions of Americans across the country,” Senator Casey said. “I’m hopeful that the President will host an event to honor the 75th anniversary of Little League International next summer. Summer baseball helps children across the country engage in exercise and the annual tournament showcases the beauty of North Central Pennsylvania.”

Dear Mr. President:
I am writing to invite you to host the 75th Anniversary celebration of Little League International sometime next summer at the White House. Played each summer in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, the Little League World Series is the World’s largest youth sporting event and is watched globally. The event draws thousands of people to the Williamsport area and provides a boost to the regional economy. In 1989 President George H.W. Bush hosted a 50th anniversary celebration, bringing together Little Leaguers, Major League Baseball players, and civic leaders to honor the League’s efforts on behalf of America’s youth.
For millions of American children, Little League baseball serves as a primary form of exercise. By fostering the physical and emotional health of many young Americans, Little League Baseball embodies many of the ideals of the First Lady’s, “Let’s Move” campaign. The tournament also provides American youth with the opportunity to experience competition on a global level and establish cross-cultural ties with foreign teams and players coming to our country to compete. Little League International has a strong commitment to public service, strengthening communities not only through a shared love of baseball, but also through charity and service work. Moreover, Little Leagues across the country play an essential role in educating young children and helping them succeed in the future.
For three quarters of a century, Little League Baseball has brought families, communities, and countries together to celebrate America’s pastime.
