Longtime Student Loan Firm Will Sell Off Consumer Banking Business As Early as Next Year
Company Employs Approximately 900 Workers in Northeastern Pennsylvania
In Letter, Casey Cites Region’s Highly Skilled Workforce
Washington, DC- Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) released a letter to Sallie Mae CEO John Remondi urging the company to protect jobs in Northeastern Pennsylvania as it plans to sell off its consumer banking business as early as next year. Recently the longtime student loan firm announced they would sell its consumer banking arm which has left a degree of uncertainty regarding the workforce’s future. Currently, the company employs approximately 900 in Northeastern Pennsylvania. In Casey’s letter, he cited the region’s high quality workforce and long history with Sallie Mae as he urged the company to maintain jobs.
“Sallie Mae is a major employer in Northeastern Pennsylvania and it’s important these jobs are protected,” Senator Casey said. “Our region’s highly skilled workforce has a long history with Sallie Mae. As the company makes this transition, I’ll be pushing to ensure jobs in Northeastern Pennsylvania are protected.”

I am writing to congratulate you on being named CEO of Sallie Mae and to urge you to consider the important work the Sallie Mae employees in Hanover Township, Luzerne County, have provided to the company for more than 25 years.
As you are aware, Sallie Mae’s loan servicing facility in Northeastern Pennsylvania employs approximately 900 people and the loss of these jobs would have serious repercussions on the regional economy. As you continue your work in restructuring into two separate companies, I urge you to consider this highly skilled workforce and to maintain these jobs in this region.
I look forward to any opportunity to work with you to keep this loan servicing facility open and to protect these jobs.
