WASHINGTON, DC- U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) praised the U.S. Department of Agriculture for including EarthBoxes, based in Scranton, as part of its “People’s Garden” initiative to promote sustainable agriculture and healthy food.  Senator Casey had previously urged the USDA to review the use of EarthBoxes for use in USDA conservation programs.

Senator Casey released the following statement:

“It is good to see an innovative product from Northeastern Pennsylvania recognized by the USDA.  Homegrown fruits and vegetables not only encourage proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle, but it can have a profound global impact.

“At home, gardens can help reduce food costs for families while also providing good nutrition that can lead to better academic performance for children and better health.

“Sustainable agriculture is good for the environment but also good for future crop yields is critical for nutrition and even global security.  While proper nutrition is important to everyone, the ability to even grow food in many parts of the world is a matter of life and death.

“EarthBoxes, from Scranton, have been widely recognized as a vehicle for sustainable agriculture by producing a self-contained garden that requires less water and fertilizer than a conventional garden.  It is always gratifying to see a Pennsylvania company do innovative work that can have a profound impact on the lives of so many people around the world.”
