$1 Invested in SNAP Generates $1.70 in Economic Activity / 3/4 of SNAP Benefits Go to Families with Children; 1/3 of Beneficiaries Are Seniors and Those with Disabilities / Another Attempt to Block Grant Medicaid Could Leave Millions without Coverage

Washington DC- U.S. Senator Bob Casey, a member of the Senate Finance and Agriculture Committees, released a statement following a new report (link) that Senate Republicans will attempt to gut the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid in their upcoming budget. The report of cuts comes even as economic data continues to show that $1 invested in SNAP generated $1.70 in economic growth. According to the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, 3/4 of SNAP benefits go to families with children and that 1/3 of beneficiaries are seniors and those with disabilities. Yet another attempt by Senate Republicans to block grant Medicaid could leave millions without coverage.

“Balancing the budget on the backs of working families who have borne the brunt of the recession makes no economic sense.  We should start making smart fiscal decisions that will drive consumer spending and help Americans get back on their feet so that they can help drive the economy.”
