Losing team’s Senators to send winning offices hometown products
WASHINGTON, DC- U.S. Senators Bob Casey (D-PA) and Arlen Specter (R-PA) today placed a friendly bi-partisan wager with Senators Mel Martinez (R-FL) and Bill Nelson (D-FL) over the World Series Championship between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Tampa Bay Rays. The Senators from the losing team's state will deliver traditional hometown products to the winning team's Senate offices.
“The Fightin’ Phils are well positioned to win their first world championship in 28 years. This team reflects what Philadelphia is all about—hard work, determination and perseverance,” said Senator Casey. “The Phillies have battled hard throughout the season to get to this point, and I am looking forward to an exciting Series. Tampa better be ready!”
“The Rays are a tough, young team, but I believe they will have their hands full with the likes of Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels, Chase Utley, reigning MVP Jimmy Rollins, and the Flyin’ Hawaiian Shane Victorino. The loyal fans in Philadelphia are ready for a victory parade down Broad Street, and this Phillies club has the talent to bring home a World Series title,” said Senator Specter.
“Never underestimate the power of the Rays. Coach Maddon proved 9 = 8 and the team has proven they have the drive, skill, and determination to win,” Senator Martinez said. “I look forward to a great series but also a humbling result for the Phillies.”
"I'm betting the Rays will make it to the White House before either Obama or McCain," Senator Nelson said, referring to the custom of having the World Series victor visit the president.
The wager will be settled in the weeks following the end of the series.
Philadelphia hometown products include: Pat’s Cheese steaks, Soft pretzels, Cheesecake, Tastykakes and Herr’s chips.
Tampa Bay products include: a box of citrus, Cuban pastries, Ted Peters Famous Smoked Fish and the Columbia Restaurant Spanish Cookbook.
