Health and Safety of Constituents Top Priority / Casey Asks EPA about Any Potential Federal Oversight
Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) sent a letter to EPA Regional Administrator Shawn Garvin asking the department to take into consideration constituent concerns regarding the Keystone landfill. He specifically asked the EPA to evaluate any federal oversight role including laws such as the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Clean Water Act.
"The health and safety of my constituents is my top priority," said Senator Casey. "I want to ensure that every appropriate step is being taken to ensure their well-being."
The text of Senator Casey’s letter is below:
Dear Mr. Garvin:
I understand that the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is currently reviewing a permit for expansion of the Keystone Landfill in Dunmore. The health and safety of my constituents is my top priority. I have been contacted by constituents regarding this permit and I am enclosing correspondence that I have received.
In response to my constituents’ concerns, I ask that you please review this correspondence. I understand that EPA approved Pennsylvania’s solid waste management program in 1994, thus the Commonwealth has responsibility for permitting and regulating landfills. I understand EPA’s role may be limited in permitting the Keystone Landfill, but I request that you also consider any Federal role in oversight of the landfill, including compliance with Federal environmental laws such as the Safe Drinking Water Act and Clean Water Act.
