Funding Is Contained in the Fiscal Year 2009 LHHS Appropriations Bill
Washington, D.C. – Today U.S. Senators Arlen Specter, Ranking Member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, and Bob Casey announced the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee has approved funding for several Southeastern Pennsylvania health care, education and labor projects. The projects are contained in the Fiscal Year 2009 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations bill.
“I am pleased my colleagues have approved this important funding for Southeastern Pennsylvania,” Senator Specter said. “Health and education are our nation’s greatest capital assets, and these projects are vital to ensuring quality health care and education for the area’s residents.”
“This money is great news for Southeastern Pennsylvania and I am pleased that members of the committee approved this funding,” said Senator Casey. “I will continue working with Senator Specter to ensure residents of the area have access to quality health care and education.”
The bill will now await action on the Senate floor and must be approved by the House of Representatives and the President of the United States before funding is final.
Southeastern Pennsylvania projects in the bill include:
• $200,000 for SouthEastern Pennsylvania Consortium for Higher Education in Montgomery County for the Institute of Mathematics and Science to provide professional development to K–12 teachers in math and science instruction.
• $200,000 for Philadelphia Shipyard Development Corporation in Philadelphia County for job training to create a more competitive small business shipbuilding network in the region.
• $100,000 for Grand View Hospital, Inc. in Bucks County to purchase and install an Electronic Health Records system.
• $100,000 for Saint Mary Medical Center in Bucks County for renovations and construction to add a critical care capacity to the hospital.
• $100,000 for Chester County Hospital in Chester County for construction and equipment for a new inpatient building, as well as increasing the number of hospital beds.
• $100,000 for Immaculata University in Chester County for nursing education programs which will be provided at off-site hospital locations with the goal of assisting registered nurses in attaining bachelor and MSN degrees.
• $100,000 for Paoli Hospital in Chester County for construction, renovation and equipment to support a community growth accommodation and expansion project in suburban Philadelphia.
• $100,000 for West Chester University in Chester County for technology infrastructure upgrades which will include improvements to the University's Information Technology Center.
• $100,000 for Cabrini College in Delaware County for professional development for K 12 teachers in science instruction. The Cabrini College Center for Environmental Education, Research and Conservation will offer ecology and environmental education courses to area teachers.
• $100,000 for Lincoln University in Chester County to support a distance learning initiative, including the purchase of equipment which will enable program participants to interface on-line, as well as link to interactive classrooms and other educational programs electronically.
• $100,000 for Cheyney University in Delaware County to develop model best practices in early childhood education, curriculum instruction and assessment, as well as give students the opportunity to learn innovative hands-on, teaching skills.
• $100,000 for Crozer Chester Medical Center in Delaware County for renovation and equipment to replace 18 bed side monitors in the Neonatal ICU.
• $100,000 for Delaware County Community College in Delaware County to acquire state of the art equipment and for laboratory improvements for the Science, Engineering, and Technology Complex.
• $100,000 for Eastern University in Delaware County for an initiative to increase minority access to higher education through a partnership with “People for People.” The project aims to engage traditionally underrepresented and disenfranchised north and south Philadelphia residents in pursuing higher education.
• $100,000 for Neumann College in Delaware County to support a health care workforce training initiative, including the development of degrees in health care administration, pharmacy and pharmacy management.
• $100,000 for Holy Redeemer Health System in Montgomery County for construction, renovation and equipment to build a healthy living center in Northeast Philadelphia.
• $100,000 for Montgomery County Community College in Montgomery County for curriculum development and equipment acquisition to support a health services initiative which will involve developing advanced curriculum and acquiring technology to train students in high demand health science careers, such as nursing and medical technology.
• $100,000 for Penn Asian Senior Services in Montgomery County to support career advancement and training services in the health care industry for immigrant populations in Pennsylvania.
• $100,000 for Albert Einstein Healthcare Network in Philadelphia County for a college student health screening program which will involve the expansion to campuses currently not being served.
• $100,000 for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Southeastern Pennsylvania in Philadelphia County for recruitment, placement and oversight of school based mentoring programs with the goal of decreasing truancy rates and students' involvement with the juvenile justice system.
• $100,000 for Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in Philadelphia County for renovation and equipment to create a trauma, shock and cardiac arrest resuscitation test bed for infants, children and young adults.
• $100,000 Children's Literacy Initiative in Philadelphia County to improve the reading readiness and early literacy of children in high poverty communities by offering professional development, individual coaching sessions in the classroom, group workshops and access to books.
• $100,000 for Congreso de Latinos Unidos in Philadelphia County for job training in high growth employment sectors. Congreso will train individuals who are unemployed or underemployed community residents in career ladder employment opportunities, such as environmental services, transportation, banking, insurance and health care positions.
• $100,000 for Delaware Valley Community Health in Philadelphia County for renovation and equipment to support the creation of an Electronic Health Records system.
• $100,000 for Esperanza in Philadelphia County for a job training initiative which recruits, trains and prepares Latino at risk and adjudicated youth for the workforce.
• $100,000 for Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia County for renovation and equipment for the clinical operation unit, including radiation technology, laser microscope, spectrometer, PET upgrade, digital mass spectrometer and digital mammography equipment.
• $100,000 for Impact Services Corporation in Philadelphia County to provide workforce development services to homeless, disabled, dual diagnosed, and other special needs veterans in the Greater Philadelphia area.
• $100,000 for Mercy Philadelphia Hospital in Philadelphia County to expand the hospital’s emergency room so it can better accommodate the increased demand for services.
• $100,000 for Myrna Brind Center for Integrative Medicine in Philadelphia County to develop model clinical programs, including advanced comprehensive health screenings and health programs for women.
• $100,000 for Nazareth Hospital in Philadelphia County for renovation and equipment to support the creation of a central station designed to care for patients who are seriously injured.
$100,000 for Philadelphia University in Philadelphia County for equipment to research and identify alternative materials that could be used in the manufacturing process to eliminate toxins from consumer textiles and apparel products.
• $100,000 for Project HOME in Philadelphia County for afterschool and summer programs that will provide educational opportunities for students through comprehensive technology and literacy instruction.
• $100,000 for Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia County to develop a Public Education Partnership to provide professional development to area principals and teachers.
• $100,000 for Temple University Health System in Philadelphia County to update the hospital’s infrastructure at its Episcopal Campus.
• $100,000 for Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia County for renovation and equipment to create a Three Dimensional Projection Environment for Molecular Design and Survival Simulation
• $100,000 for Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia County to purchase equipment for the center of Cardiac Surgery, including Robotic Computerized Telemanipulation, including the DaVinci Robotics System, Intensive Care Beds and MIS OR Renovations.
• $100,000 for United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania in Philadelphia County for recruitment, placement, and oversight of school based mentoring programs with the goal of decreasing truancy rates and students' involvement with the juvenile justice system.
• $100,000 for University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia County for construction and equipment to establish a National Center for Therapeutic Excellence.
• $100,000 for University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in Philadelphia County for a science education partnership which will provide professional development to area teachers and expose underserved minority students to innovative instruction with an opportunity to take college level courses.
• $100,000 for Widener University in Philadelphia County to develop rigorous standards based curriculum and provide professional development in reading and math to area teachers.
• $100,000 for Wills Eye Health System in Philadelphia County to support the creation of an electronic medical records network to benefit patients seen in their clinical practice, ambulatory surgery center, and diagnostic testing center.
• $100,000 for Wistar Institute in Philadelphia County to develop a High Throughput Screening Facility to rapidly analyze the effectiveness of known chemicals in regulating molecular pathways, providing a starting point for drug development
