Funding will help make much-needed repairs to runways, infrastructure
Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senators Arlen Specter and Bob Casey announced today that Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will allocate $12 million in federal funding to two Pittsburgh area airports. The grants are enabled by the recently enacted American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
Pittsburgh International Airport will receive $10 million in funding to repair runway 14-32, one of four commercial service runways. The repairs include grading, paving, marking signs, and lighting upgrades.
Allegheny County Airport in West Mifflin, PA is set to receive $2 million in federal funding to renovate a taxiway and relocate a ramp. The airport is the seventh busiest airport in Pennsylvania and serves as the primary FAA-designated reliever airport for Pittsburgh International Airport.
"Senators Specter and Casey deserve tremendous credit for helping pass the Recovery Act to get our economy going again. The funds announced today will create jobs now – but will also be an investment in the long-term safety of our airports and their economic vitality," said Vice President Biden.
“I am pleased to see the stimulus funds at work in the Pittsburgh area,” said Senator Specter. “This funding will allow the airports to make much-needed repairs and to better serve the millions of passengers that frequent the Pittsburgh airports each year.”
“I am happy that these recovery funds are being allocated so quickly for the Pittsburgh area,” Senator Casey said. “These funds will help Pittsburgh International and Allegheny County airports become safer and more efficient for travelers to and from Southwestern Pennsylvania.”
Both Pittsburgh International Airport and Allegheny County Airport are operated by the Allegheny County Airport Authority.
