Funding is Part of the FY 2009 Continuing Resolution
Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senators Arlen Specter and Bob Casey announced today that the full U.S. Congress and the President have approved federal funding for several defense-related projects in Central Pennsylvania as contained in the Fiscal Year 2009 Continuing Resolution (HR 2638).
“I am pleased that my colleagues have recognized the valuable contribution these projects will make to our nation’s defense,” said Senator Specter. “Pennsylvania is a top competitor for defense projects that create jobs and strengthen our economy and these funds will go far in supporting the brave men and women who serve our country.”
“The projects will play an important role in strengthening our nation’s military readiness and promoting job creation in Pennsylvania,” said Senator Casey. “I am pleased that my colleagues have approved this important funding to improve Pennsylvania’s military installations and strengthen our nation’s defense.”
The continuing resolution was passed by both houses of Congress and signed into law Tuesday by President of the United States.
Funding has been approved for the following defense projects in Central Pennsylvania (if a House Member also requested the project, his name is indicated in parentheses):
· $22.4 million for Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg.
· $14.9 million has been appropriated for construction of a new Army Reserve Center at Letterkenny Army Depot. Current Reserve facilities are out of date and contain insufficient storage areas for military equipment. The new Center will provide a 300 member training facility with administrative areas, classrooms, assembly hall, arms vault, kitchen, equipment storage areas, physical training rooms, and maintenance facilities. An area maintenance facility will house higher level maintenance operations for the entire region. (Bill Shuster)
· The Congress approved an additional $7.5 million for upgrades to Letterkenny’s Munitions Igloos. Letterkenny’s Munitions Center (LEMC) is a major receiving, storage, maintenance and shipping site for both tactical missiles and conventional munitions. This funding will allow military construction funds to enhance the infrastructure and improve Letterkenny’s ability to respond to emerging challenges. (Bill Shuster)
· $13.4 million for the Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle to construct a Museum Support Facility at the Carlisle Barracks. When completed, the Museum Support Facility will provide conservation support for the entire Army.
· $3 million for the Pennsylvania National Guard’s Northeast Counterdrug Training Center in Lebanon County to provide training for DoD personnel, military units, local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and community anti-drug coalitions.
· $2.4 million for Impact Technologies in Centre County to improve ground support systems for F/A-18 fighter aircraft. (John Peterson)
· $2.4 million for KCF Technologies in Centre County to develop a self-powered prosthetic limb. (John Peterson)
· $2 million for L3 Communications, Electronic Devices in Williamsport to develop a compact, extremely high frequency (EHF) transmitter is the critical technology which will enable troops to transmit battlefield tactical information at a very high speed. (Chris Carney)
· $1.6 million for Covanta Energy in Dauphin County to assess commercially-available technologies for conversion of municipal solid waste to renewable diesel fuel.
· $1.6 million for Nanoblox of State College to support the establishment of a domestic source of nanodiamonds for a wide variety of military applications, including the development of lightweight armor. (John Peterson)
· $1.4 million for InRange System in Blair County to support a project that will enable a medical provider to remotely deliver, adjust, and monitor a patient’s drug therapy during all stages of recovery. (English, Brady)
· $1.2 million for TRS Technologies in Centre County to scale up production levels for ferroelectric components in devices to counter improvised explosive devices (IEDs). (John Peterson)
· $880,000 for the York Army National Guard Facility in York for the design of a 37,700 square foot environmentally and energy efficient facility to support 108 soldiers, including a Stryker Brigade Combat Team.
· $620,000 for the design of the Combat Vehicle Training Facility at Fort Indiantown Gap. The project will provide a 22,000 square foot facility to train soldiers in Abrams, Bradley, and Howitzer gunnery simulations and Stryker variants.
