Washington, D.C. - Senators Arlen Specter and Bob Casey announced that the Department of Homeland Security has approved $696,303 for University of Pittsburgh in Allegheny County.

“These fire prevention and safety programs will help protect the citizens of Pennsylvania and the firefighters who risk their lives every day,” Senator Specter said.  “I commend the Department of Homeland Security for recognizing this priority and for its continued support of the nation’s fire services.”
“Firefighters are invaluable members of the community and they work tirelessly to ensure our safety. It is critical that we do everything in our power to provide them with the necessary tools and resources to perform their jobs,” said Senator Casey.  “This money will provide valuable assistance to promote fire prevention and safety in Allegheny County.”

The funding is contained in round 8 of the competitive Fiscal Year 2009 Fire Protection and Safety Award Announcements.  Fire Prevention and Safety awards are one-year grants for fire departments throughout the United States to assist national, state, regional, or local organizations in addressing fire prevention and safety issues.  The grants are administered by U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Office of Grants and Training (G&T) in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA).
